Police Department History
The City of New Haven was founded in 1836 as Millers Landing. In 1856, the name was changed to New Haven. The town was officially incorporated in 1881. New Haven is located in northwestern Franklin County in eastern Missouri.
The New Haven Police Department has served this small river town since its establishment in 1984. Prior to that, the community had town marshal. The first marshal, James Byers, started in 1875.
The first police chief was Wilbur Barberick, followed by Larrie Buchheit, John Scheible, Dan Terry, Christopher Hammann and John Hallquist. Christopher Neace was sworn in as the current chief in December 2024.
When fully staffed, New Haven is served by seven full time officers. When needed, the Franklin County Sheriff's Department provides personnel to assist with coverage. The police department currently maintains four patrol vehicles.
Aside from normal police investigations, patrol operations and business checks, the department provides mutual aid to surrounding area agencies. We maintain a close working relationship with local schools and groups such as the American Legion, Lions Club, Senior Center and other organizations.
